Epilogue - The Places we have been

Well it’s our last night and I’ve chosen the tightest little anchorage on the coast, Frenchman’s Cove just around the point for our run down the Straight back to home port.  We’ve had our last supper and a full moon is lighting up the cove as everyone gets a turn on YouTube music to choose an artist and a song.  Our run of the rapids was a bit more edgy than the run in but we made it through without incident.  The whale bell was rung on the way down Agamemnon Channel with 3 orcas on our port side and we spent a delightful day on the beach on Thormanby island. A great way to end the trip.

I’ll never forget Patti on the dock at Bishop’s Bay directing traffic and access to the hot tub between Vietnamese fisherman, drunken fishermen and water taxi passengers

Although we haven’t solved any of the worlds problem’s on this trip, the people we have met have given us hope, Brady who is willing to spend months on his boat as a ranger for the Kitsoo band to protect the Grizzlies of Khutze inlet, the young woman Patti met in Rupert that has 2 degrees in health care and wants to stay in the North to help her community access health care resources, Harriet from Ocean Falls that we met at Shearwater who has overcome many life challenges yet maintains a positive outlook and is trying to make her community a better place by fighting corruption, bringing truth to light and helping her fellow band members overcome addiction as well as teaching her grandfathers lessons to the youngsters.

And of course we have to thank all of the dock masters, greeters, marina owners, managers, repair shops, electronics dealers who made a special 30km trip to deliver us a new chip and mechanics and everyone who went out of their way for us on this trip, all amazing people. Kevin at Prince Rupert yacht club, Sarah at Denham Bay, Harriet at Shearwater and Last but not least Aunt Deanna who made one of our last days of the trip very special.

I would never have believed that playing Crib involved rolling fits of laughter before playing it with Patti and Roman

A lot of people have remarked that it was amazing that we spent a month on a boat 24/7 with each other and didn’t fight or want to kill each other.  It of course helps that Patti and Roman are still clearly very much in love and involved in life after many years and that their relationship is very strong.  We have lived what seems like a lifetime in the past months and have become good friends.

After spending time together in such close quarters and getting to know them it is abundantly clear that they are just honest, real, kind and good people.  The formula just fit like a glove this time round and seems like it was just meant to be.

The trip has truly been a bucket list adventure that far exceeded my expectations and I’m so glad that Roman and Patti threw caution and better judgment to the wind and just said yes!  I know they won’t forget this trip as long as they live and the experiences we all shared and hopefully this blog has allowed you to join us on the trip of a lifetime and given you an appreciation of what an amazing place we live in, why we need to fight to protect it and some sense of what you can do to help.  Start simple by Taking a Trace with you when you visit somewhere, leave it better than when you came.
