Day 13 - Here comes the Sun

Our day was spent with errands, corralling mechanics, sketching and a visit to the local hospital to see about my badly cut finger which is refusing to heal (the doc took a look and said nothing to do but wound care and a long round of antibiotics) so this will cut down my evening cocktail(s). 

The mechanics diagnosis was a new starter which he is trying to get for tommorrow but the genset needs a new voltage regulator board which is 5-7 business days away at best and longer at worst so the rest of the trip will be more like camping with lots of blankets and comforters to stay warm for the run down to the Broughton’s where we can find marinas to plug into shore power.  It also means no more bread until we can get to marinas where we can use the oven. 

Hopefully we can get the starter fixed and then we will head to see the grizzlies for a night before refuelling in Rupert before the trip down Grenville channel Thursday.  The weather is improving and the day today was spectacular once the fog burned off.  It was good to get out for a long walk on the waterfront trail we were recommended.  We all think Rupert reminds us of North Vancouver, it’s quite beautiful and the people have been nothing but super friendly.  We would all recommend a visit if you’re in these parts. 

It was hot enough to break out the barbecue and grill some rib eyes and Roman whipped up a large Greek salad to go with the steak which was excellent. Ronan has been reading a national geographic on Pirates that their good friend Margot gave us for a bon voyage gift and read us the Articles of John Phillips, captain of the Revenge, a kind of code of conduct for his crew in 1724.  We have decided that the Kona Kai also needs its own set of Articles.  I have drafted a set of codes  - to be refined as we continue the trip as we near the halfway point.  

I. Every crew member shall obey civil command; if we come upon a prize, the captain shall have one full share and a half of all prizes.  The cook snd master navigator shall each have one share and a quarter.

II. If any person shall offer to run away, or keep any secret from the Captain, they shall be marooned with one charged iPhone, one bottle of Kombucha, one Swiss Army knife and one bar of soap.

III.  If any person shall be wasteful of water or power they shall be forced to spend a day in kitimat.

IV. If a person shall Strike another while on the voyage with these articles in full effect, that person shall receive Nathan’s Law (that is 5 days of dish duty.

V. If any person shall forget to wear their life jacket on deck, that person shall suffer the same punishment as in the former article.

VI. That person who shall not keep their clothes clean, fit fir a visit to an establishment on shore, shall be cut off from their share, and suffer such other punishment as the captain and company see fit.

Day 2 - Teakern Arm

  I’m lying here in the V berth listening to the rain patter on the deck above me with the waterfall roaring softly in the distance.     For the first time visiting Teakern, I’ve been able to secure the coveted anchorage in front of the falls albeit with a difficult anchoring where we had two attempts to set the hook at a 4:1 scope at the top of a drop-off that slopes to 100 feet combined with a stern tie to a small but sturdy tree which involved a climb up a rocky oyster and barnacle infested ledge. We’re all elated and exhausted after quite a challenging day. Day 3 - The Five Gates and the 3 F’s

We departed Teakern at 9am sharp after an uneventful retrieval of the stern tie and a breakfast of eggs, toasted sourdough and Grandma Junie’s jam made from her raspberries. We were aiming for the 11:30am slack window at Dent Rapids.  Approaching Yuculta Rapids the turn was still underway as we passed the world famous Sonora fishing resort and we saw some good eddies and whirlpools.  Making the turn to port, we were outrun by a small flotilla of Grady Whites heading out for the day’s fishing.  Passing through Devils Hole was uneventful as were the remaining three rapids at Arran, Green Point with only Whirpool Rapids giving is a bit of a thrill with the turn starting as we transited. Aiming  for slack at Dent was definitely the way to go if you’re headed this way. Despite the forecast calling for westerlies, they will be light so I decided to tuck into a small bay called Bessborough before we head into Johnstone Straight tommorrow for the Broughtons.  After anchoring in 25 feet of wate

Epilogue - The Places we have been

Well it’s our last night and I’ve chosen the tightest little anchorage on the coast, Frenchman’s Cove just around the point for our run down the Straight back to home port.  We’ve had our last supper and a full moon is lighting up the cove as everyone gets a turn on YouTube music to choose an artist and a song.  Our run of the rapids was a bit more edgy than the run in but we made it through without incident.  The whale bell was rung on the way down Agamemnon Channel with 3 orcas on our port side and we spent a delightful day on the beach on Thormanby island. A great way to end the trip.  I’ll never forget Patti on the dock at Bishop’s Bay directing traffic and access to the hot tub between Vietnamese fisherman, drunken fishermen and water taxi passengers  Although we haven’t solved any of the worlds problem’s on this trip, the people we have met have given us hope, Brady who is willing to spend months on his boat as a ranger for the Kitsoo band to protect the Grizzlies of Khutze inlet
