Day 15 - God’s Pocket

After awakening to a mist and fog shrouded morning, we all piled into the skiff to see if we could see any more bears and were rewarded with close up views of a sow and Cubs In the same place we saw them upon arriving in the inlet yesterday.  We spent about half an hour observing them before heading back to the boat just in time for the rain to start.  We weighed anchor and I radioed the rangers to thank them for their generous gesture and we made our way up the inlet, stopping twice for bears that we saw in a couple of other Sedge covered bays and meadows that I thought looked promising on the chart.  The rain was steady crossing Dixon Entrance but the forecast predicted sun by 4 which proved to be true as we made our way into the Dundas islands, a chain of small islets and shallow coves which mark the outer edge of Dixon and the last bit of land before Haida Gwaii.

It’s obvious from the stunted state of the trees and the amount of driftwood and large logs on the rocks that the islets get hit with a lot of weather but tonight the water was calm and the winds light.

As predicted, we could see a high pressure ridge that appeared to line up appropriately with our destination tonight called God’s Pocket.  This was a small almost perfectly round bay located off the main channel to Hecate Straight and Kevin at the marina has told us that the Bay is known for its bio-luminescence so I have set the alarm for 12:30 and will wake Patti and Roman up if I witness anything.

We are less than 15 nautical miles from the Alaska border and we have reached the northernmost part of our journey. When we leave tommorrow to go back to Rupert we will officially be on our way home as we will be heading south from this point on. So far the trip has been everything I imagined and so much more.

In other happenings, Roman is on the Cribbage scoreboard (Captain 3, Patti 4 and Roman 1) and Patti completed the puzzle that she found on the boat and has been working diligently to finish these past few days.
