Day 17 - In Our Wake

We awoke to glorious sunshine and no wind and one wanted to get going so it was a lazy morning of fishing, trying out the drone and a mushroom yellow pepper scramble.  Finally getting underway at 11am we were fighting against a flood tide the whole way down Grenville and we pulled into Lowe  inlet for a quick lunch anchored in front of the waterfall.  The flood was still strong when we got going again and a strong 20 knot southwesterly hit us as well as the ebb tide causing some waves over the bow as we entered Douglas channel after sneaking through the channel beside Hartley Bay. Verney Passage was spectacular and we were able to see all of the glaciers on this run without the mist and rain. The winds continued almost all the way to Bishops where we decided to spend the night.

We got there just in time to snag the last mooring buoy and we’ll head over for an early morning hot spring before we depart for the 5 hour run to Bottleneck for our next night before civilization and fuel beckons at Shearwater Resort.

Patti has been reading us excerpts from The Golden Spruce, an incredible story about logging, environmental activism, the Haida and the Queen Charlottes and it is numbing to know that not one square inch of old growth Has survived in the areas we are travelling through; it has all been logged and exploited over the past century and a half.  Although it looks green and lush it is actually a large monoculture tree farm with a fraction of the bio diversity of the original old growth forest. We are placing our faith on the next generation to somehow escape this system based on continuous growth, terra farming and raping the land. My kids give me hope as do Patti and Romans kids. Based on what we have witnessed this generation and system is irrevocably broken.

We are planning to visit the Ghost town at Ocean falls before exploring the small islets around Hunter Island before our last night in Fish Egg Inlet before heading around Cape Caution (weather permitting) planned for Wednesday.

The return leg seems to be longer on these in and back type of trips - always strange but it’s probably because the anticipation is gone and you know what to expect.

Kate and Leopold on tap for tonight’s movie.
