Day 26 - Back in Harmony

We’re anchored in one of my favourite spots on the coast, tucked into a nook behind one of the islands in the Harmony islands marine park in Hotham Sound.  It’s only about a 45 minute hop to the head of Skookumchuk rapids which we will traverse tommorrow to head into Sechelt Inlet for our second to last night of the trip.

It was Father’s Day today so it was good we had cell service again most of the way down from Lund where we stopped for some fuel, water and a delicious breakfast at Nancy’s bakery, famous up and down the coast for its Cinnamon Buns and friendly service. Roman and I both got to talk to all of our kids which was a treat.

Malaspina Straight was calm most of the way but started to get lumpy around Nelson Island where we tucked back in for the run to Hotham. As promised, the day was clear, sunny and hot but we got notice of a Gale warning for the Georgia straight for tonight, tommorrow and Monday so it’s a good thing we’ll be in the inlet and it should calm down for our run home.

After stern tying to one of the handy tie rings BC Parks has installed, i took 5 minutes to gather some oysters for dinner. As usual they were around in abundance and i shucked a bakers dozen while Roman prepared an onion vinaigrette.

This magical spot never fails to disappoint and the water is always good for swimming so for the first time on the trip Patti and Roman went for a dip.  Later as we had cocktails on the back deck, schools of herring surrounded the boat, an eagle dipped into the water to snag a herring and fly into a nearby tree to eat it and we witnessed a seal cavorting through the herring ball for his dinner less than 5 feet from the back of the boat. We all pinched ourselves to make sure we weren’t dreaming.

Later in the afternoon, Patti and I went for a run in the skiff around the islands and found a large piece of styrofoam the size of a surfboard that we towed back for our “trace”’of the day.

We cooked our last steak on the bbq with our remaining  potatoes and Brussels sprouts and breaded the rest of the oysters in some flour, egg and Panko for an amazing appetizer and after dinner we chilled in the cabin listening to music watching an amazing sunset unfold with a view of a beautiful wooden ketch framed by the other window of the salon.  Yet another “shoot me now” moment of the trip. We live in a amazing part of the world, this trip has taught us that we need to stop and appreciate what is around us and how blessed we are and stop complaining about minor inconveniences.
